Touchdown Girls [GoldBerg]

Baxter Wright finished the night 16-of-24 passing for 319 yards and five touchdowns through the air, including two each to Tre Reece (five catches, 104 yards) and Sky Niblett (5-71) as Gainesville (4-0) rolled up 433 yards of total offense, while committing just one turnover.

The junior zipped a pass on a slant pattern to Reece, who sliced his way through the secondary and broke away for a 45-yard touchdown to give Gainesville its first lead of the game at 10-3 with 4:16 left in the half.

That allowed Gainesville to get some work for its reserves, including a 68-yard touchdown run by sophomore Kylan Hall (four carries, 81 yards) with 4:26 remaining to match a 57-yard TD run by Anderson with 2:53 left to account for the final margin.

But it was a blocked field goal returned 76 yards for a touchdown by Zyrion Harrison late in the first half that was perhaps the catalyst for the Red Elephants to seize momentum and stampede to a 30-7 win at City Park Stadium.

The offense did have its moments, with Baxter Wright completing 13 of 17 passes for 146 yards, including a touchdown pass to Sky Niblett in the third quarter, while Naim Cheeks applied the big offensive play it needed with a 53-yard scoring run that helped improve Gainesville to 2-0 on the young season.

Given all the miscues, it seems appropriate that the only two touchdowns of the half came on unusual plays after Eric Guerra gave Gainesville a 3-0 lead with a 27-yard field goal on the final play of the first quarter.

However, Dre Raven rushed in to get a hand on the kick, and Harrison caught the loose ball and sprinted 76 yards down the left sideline behind a convoy escort for the touchdown with 1:16 left in the half.

It was a frigid, sunny day, mostly in the high 30s temperature, but the girls were not deterred and all played hard to the end of all their games. The Port Youth Activities (PYA) hosted the event, brainstormed and orchestrated by Sloane Weiner and Nellie Sandler, two Port Washington moms. The teams were all coached by parent volunteers.

With only four games left in the regular season the Lady Wreckers have made much improvement so far. "We've had to deal with a lot of injuries, so it has been difficult at the same time, but our game has matured a lot. The girls know when and how to go to goal, and we are communicating more effectively. All in all we've improved in every capacity," Schager said.

Eric Fischer, Chris Killeen, Mikey Minyo and Takuma Fujikawa played well on offense, opening up running lanes and blocking aggressively. The defensive line held strong all game, behind the aggressive play of Andrew Tweddle, Brian Mullins, Justin Norton and Ignacy Pietryka. Stefanowicz, Peter Vomvolakis, Norton, Lanzarone and Pietryka also made several tackles in the contest.

BANC established an early lead with double touchdowns by Donte Adams and a beautiful extra-point catch by Zyian Cooper. The defense capitalized on the wet conditions with four interceptions and two fumble recoveries. The interceptions by Donte Adams, Logan Jozwick, Tripp Beasley and Connor Jones kept the momentum going despite the conditions. The inception by Jones was a pick-six, giving BANC its third score. The final touchdown was punched in by Tripp Beasley III, who ran hard all day long. His runs were made possible by outstanding blocks from Will Acevedos, Thiago Camargo and Kaleb Solomon. The Red Tide defense also had incredible ground work, with pinpoint tackling from James Roina, Nick Granitto. Xavion Faison, Alex Flook, Tyler Senft and LJ Bylow.

After quickly falling behind by a few touchdowns, Generals Tim Elder, Sammy Cohen, Adam McFarlane, Charlie Allard and Ilan Amaro worked as a unit to strengthen the rushing and passing attack. In addition, Patrick Leonard, Wyatt Keegan and Hugh Kaplan had strong rushes to challenge the BANC defense. On defense, Matty Goldman, Henry Johnson, Reed Williams and Brennan Cunnion made key tackles during the game, supported by excellent inside linebacker play from Charlie Tortorella and cornerback play from Alexi Gianopoulos.

Plot: A local bartender gets a tryout with the Eagles, makes the team and scores a touchdown. Based on: Vince Papale, who really did play for the Eagles. Stars: Mark Walberg, Gerg Kinnear (Dick Vermeil) and Elizabeth Banks. What went wrong: Well, it's based on a true story but really stretches it. Papale was not some curtain-jerker. He played semi-pro ball, and in the WFL so he had some serious playing credentials. And he never scored a touchdown in an NFL game. Scene stealer: The white belt on Kinnear's pants. What a look. Spoiler alert: Vermeil wins the 1980 NFC Championship Game, eventually retires but returns to lead the St. Louis Rams to the Super Bowl title in 1999.

The Miami Dolphins were regular clients, as well as Dallas Cowboy running back Tony Dorsett, who spent one Sunday night partying hard with Aguilar. The next night, the Cowboys lost the game by a touchdown to the Dolphins, and Dorsett, looking ragged after his wild night with Aguilar, had an especially poor showing.
